Welfare Party of India, in a statement issued here, strongly opposed Union BJP Government’s move to the en masse removal of certain State Governors on political considerations.

Party General Secretary Dr. S.Q.R. Ilyas said the move contravenes the much publicised conciliatory overtures and gestures offered by Prime Minister Modi in Parliament while replying to the Presidential motion. It is also not in unison with the proposition of Cooperative Federalism offered by Modi. The contention of the BJP of merely following old practices set by the UPA does not weigh much in the light of the Supreme Court observations in 2010 while discharging the petition filed by BJP parliament member B.P. Singal. Though the public interest litigation filed by the BJP parliamentarian against the dismissal of governors of UP, Gujarat, Haryana and Goa in 2004 when the Congress led UPA I came to power, was dismissed, the Supreme Court had laid down strict guidelines in this regard.

Welfare Party asked the Modi government to go with the dharma of the Supreme Court observation that mere change in government at Centre is not a ground for removal of Governors holding office and the power under Article 156(1) cannot be exercised in an arbitrary, capricious or unreasonable manner. The statement continued that the Court have restrained the Union Government to exercise the power in rare and exceptional circumstances for valid and compelling reasons.

Dr. Ilyas said the undue haste of the BJP government, in spite of Supreme Court directives, will only be construed as ploy to install remaining disgruntled Sangh leaders somewhere and to convert Rajbhawans to Sangh rajneeti kendras. The statement requested the President not to give approval to the Union Government move.
