Dr. B.T. Lalitha Naik, vice-president of the Welfare Party of India was born on 4 th April 1945 to Sri Balaji Naik and Smt Ganga Bai, at Thangali Tanda of Chikmagalur Dist of Karnatak. Fluent in Lambani and Kannada, she knows Hindi and English. She passed 10th and Hindi Visharda. Married to late Sri Champla Naik, Mrs Lalitha Naik has three sons and lives in Sanjaya Nagar, Bangalore. With deep love for literature, she has penned more than sixteen books, including Children’s Stories, Drama Collections, Novels, and Poetries. Some of her works have been selected as Text Books and included in the syllabi of universities at Gulbarga, Dharward, Mangalore and Karnataka State Women University, Bijapur. Many of her essays and poems were included in Primary and High School text books, Anthology of Kendra Sahitya Academy and Karnataka Sahitya Academy.

Mrs Lalitha Naik has a taste for journalism and had worked as reporter for LANKESH PATHRIKE WEEKLY for six years. Her diverse contribution to the Karnataka literature and Social Works was appreciated by awarding Honorary Doctorate by Kuvempu University in 2009-10.

Her keen interest in social works led her to political field. Having highlighted the oneness of humanity and wrote much against inequalities and exploitation, with ambition of social justice, Mrs Lalitha Naik joined the Janata Dal. She was elected to the Legislative Council, Karnataka (1986 – 1992 ) and became a member of the Legislative Assembly from Devdurg Constituency (1994-1999). She was a minister for Kannada and Culture and Department Women and Child Welfare, in the ministry headed by Sri Deva Gowda during 1994 – 1995. She was President of Karnataka State Bala Bhavana Society and State Women’s Janata Dal and had been a member of the National Executive of Janata Dal (Secular).

Her contribution to the literature, varied social works and selfless service to humanity in general and Banjara (Lambani) community in particular were bestowed with many awards like Best Legislator – 1987, Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award – 1991, Rajiv Gandhi National Unity Award – 1995, Dr. Channabasava Patta Devara Makkala Sahitya Prashasthi – Bhalki 2002, Kirana Prabha Award (Saheli Samste), 2002, Mahila Ratna Award Kannada Abhivrudhi Balaga, -2003, Kayaka Samman Prashasthi Gulbarga – 2004, Daana Chintamani Prashasthi, Karnataka Government - 2007, Kannadashree Prashasthi - 2010, Karnataka Choodamani – 2011 etc.

She has served as President for Karnataka Pradesh Banjara (Lambani) Seva Sangha, Bal Bhavan Society employees cultural Sangha, and Lambani Women’s Multipurpose Co- operative Society, Bangalore during various tenure. Lalitha Naik has been Honourable President of Akhila Karnataka Budga Jangama (Jangalara) Welfare Association, H.A.L Kendriya Kannada Sangha, Bangalore and Dalit Panthers of India. She serves as Vice- President of Karnataka State Pragatipara Dalita Organisation and Akhila Karnataka Vicharavadi Sangha, Bangalore. Mrs Lalitha Naik is Member Trustee of Sri Allama Prabhu Lalitha Kala Academy, Mysore , Sri Sevabhaya Janmasthala Charitable Trust, Shimoga, Akhila Bharata Paramparika Vaidya Parishat, Bhadravati etc. She is still member of of Karnataka Film Chambers

of Society, Karnataka Women’s Writers Association, and Kannada Sahitya Parishat. It is interesting that her literary skills and caliber benefitted film field also. Mrs Lalitha Naik was associated with ‘Zadero Pankheru’ (Forest Bird) Banjara Language Film – dialogue and acting 1996, Priya-O-Priya, Kannada Film – 2003, Ondu Hennina Kathe – Telefilm, Devvada Maneyalli Ditta makkalu, Children Kananda Film – 2005, Mukta – Mukta, Teleserial – 2008, ‘Ashanti’ Kannada Film - 2009
